I'm on a Subaru forum and it appears to be hit and miss isolated incidents mostly affecting the older engines. I think there is one guy with a 2.5 flat 4 who burns a quart every 3000 miles. I don't think any of the flat 6 Outbacks have this issue That would be considered by any manufacturer to be within normal tolerances.
Right now, it is a very close as I like station wagons with good proven engines, but I also really LOVE what Ford has done with the new 2017 Escapes. You also cannot argue with Subaru's flat 6 engine which is known for being exceptionally smooth while keeping the center of gravity low. The downside is that they couple that great engine to yet another CVT. The new Escapes look phenomenal on the inside as it looks upscale and plush. Supposedly, the 2017's have an improved AWD system as well although I am still not a fan of these Haldex differential style systems.
