Inaccurate fuel readings

Finally, a forum for E/M/T Hybrid owners? What a concept!

Inaccurate fuel readings

Postby Aldenh055 - November 12th, 2016, 3:23 am

Has anybody had issues with the gas Guage and readings not matching each other? For example, I'll fill the entire gas tank, at which point the electronic reading shows about 320 miles until empty, and then drive about 100 miles at which point the needle gauge already shows half a tank used up, but the electronic reading still shows about 250 miles until Empty. I find this a bit misleading, and I seem to be needing gas every 200 miles or so. Is this normal for a 2007 escape hybrid? Also, after manually calculating mpg I get around 19mpg which seems rather low. Thank you.

The distance to empty (DTE) should be calculated based on you past ~500 miles fuel economy. The numbers displayed are a rough guestimate, and not intended to be accurate. Also bear in mind that Ford intentionally sets the DTE=0 point VERY conservatively. On an FEH you have roughly 1.25 gallons of usable fuel left in the tank when the display reads 0 miles.

All that being said, I can usually get close to 500 miles on a tank before I get nervous and get fuel, however my math says that on most tanks I should be able to get 500 before running out of fuel. It could be something as simple as you have a bad fuel level sensor, and you really have more fuel in the tank than it thinks. When you hit 0 miles to empty, how much fuel does it take before the pump clicks off?

I usually fill up when it reads 40 miles until Empty, and I'd say getting a full tank uses about 11 gallons.

That's not all that far off from where you should be, When I run mine low (several miles past DTE=0) I get about 14 gallons in.

The tank holds 15 gallons, X 25mpg (avg.) = 375 miles to a tank. 19mpg sounds like it isn't running electric when it should be.

Fill the tank and write down the mileage, drive till empty and refill, and write down the mileage. Subtract the 1st reading from the 2nd reading. Divide that answer by number of gallons it took to refill (the second time). There is your current mpg. If it isn't at least 22mpg +, you have an issue with the truck or you are driving way too aggressively.

Even 25 sounds low. The 4wd hybrid was rated at 29 City/27 Highway/28 Combined. My worst tank was about 24/25 MPG. Our power was out, and I idled it in the driveway using it as a generator.

I believe my daughter is getting around 25-28 combined on the '06 AWD, which is pretty good I think. That is how I came to the 25 figure. A helluvalot better than the 19 being reported, which indicates an issue. My '04 v6 gets 20mpg avg.

Daughter was home for the weekend. All highway driving @ 70-80 mph and we live in the country w/minimum speed limits of 45. According to the FEH computer, she is averaging 25.6 mpg. Not too shabby for an '06 AWD. :yahoo:

Of course, she isn't doing the mileage the way I told her too for an accurate reading, but I'm not too concerned. She just adores her truck! :)P
