I am the 3rd owner of my 09 escape. Would this still be covered from Ford? I assume we have to take care of this ourselves and ford doesn't do the work?

Hi Larry and :welcome:

You can post in the tailgate chat or and search our site for plenty of infos on the 08-12 Escape.

Thanks Frenchy, just slowly finding my way around here.

Have been reading and the info is encouraging.

Is this just cosmetic or does it advance to a structural issue around suspension attachments prematurely?

If left unchecked it can get real bad. The good news is if you get down on your hands and knees and give the wheel wells a good look see it's pretty easy to spot. Check the tailgate as well, another rust-prone area

Thanks Max, I have seen other vehicles where the front towers have rusted right thru, from moisture trapped between the multiple layers of thin metal that were impossible to undercoat, so reading about issues on the escape concerned me.

My '06 Ranger has been undercoated 3 times over the years and shows no sign of rust despite our heavy roadsalt usage here in Ontario.

We are retired and only put on about 10k / 6000 miles a year so probably will end up finding something in the 150,000k /90,000 mile range.

All vehicles have areas of concern, that is a given. How would you personally rate a used '09 to '12 E overall as a potential purchase?

Thanks again, Larry

The closer to '12 you get the better the Escapes get. By the time the 2012 came out Ford pretty much got it all sorted out and they are among the best :thumb:

Ownership isn't the important factor - but that it's way out of its standard bumper-to-bumper warranty is.

PM with wheel questions.

I just noticed a small bubble on the lip of the rear passenger wheel well today on my 2011 Escape, not impressed as I've treated this car with Rust check prior years. I can't find this TSB 15-0157 on the NHTSA or other sites. Does anyone have official documentation that this TBS exists that they could share?.

I actually have this issue on my Escape. Ford continues to ignore the issue and note want to address it due to the fact that it doesn't appear to be perforated. So I'm going to have to deal with it myself.

I would, you'd just end up with a pile of red dust waiting for Ford to do anything about it :cuss: To be fair, Ford is no worse then any other car company when it comes to dealing with rust issues

I just dropped my 09 off at my local body shop to have the 2 rear wheel well cases of cancer fixed...

He told me the problem is so common that he has full replacement parts from a third party body parts vendor:

Otherwise I really can't complain about my Escape... with only 70,000km (43,495miles) this is the only "major" problem I've had with the car.

It's costing me around $1600, he's replacing the 2 panels as well as fixing a lot of dings and scrapes and some rust on the bottom of the tailgate and then repaint the rear.

Pat

edit: BTW it's not just surface rust. The rust is popping out from the inside, pierces the metal and then causes the paint to bubble and then peel.
