2013 Escape, First Recall (Trim/Carpet)

Postby Masquernom - July 15th, 2012, 3:50 pm

(Reuters) - Ford Motor Co is recalling some of its recently launched 2013 Escape compact sport-utility vehicles because a carpeting flaw may cause drivers to apply the brakes improperly, increasing stopping distances and the risk of crashes.

The recall affects 8,266 vehicles built between March 8 and June 7, according to papers filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Ford said improperly installed carpet padding the center console trim panel may cause a driver's foot to contact the side of the brake pedal when it moves from the accelerator to the brake.

The automaker said that on affected vehicles it will remove the carpet padding and left-side console trim panel and replace it with a new panel. The recall begins on July 23.

One of Ford's highest-profile launches in recent years, the Escape was the company's second-best selling vehicle. It was the sixth best-selling vehicle overall in the United States in June, with sales of 28,500. The top seller was Ford's F-Series truck.

Looks like I just missed it, mine was built 12 June. I don't notice any clearance issues.

Some member was just observing that very item during their test drive. I am not sure if it was a rental or purchase but that is interesting.

2013 Recall

Postby nd_scape - July 15th, 2012, 10:19 pm

"The Ford Motor Company is recalling more than 8,000 of its 2013 Escape compact SUVs because of a potential problem affecting the brake pedal.

The recall affects SUVs made between March 8 and June 7, 2012, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. There are 8,266 Escapes involved in the recall.

Ford says mispositioned carpet padding on the center console trim panel may be pushed outward, reducing clearance with the pedals, according to the NHTSA.

That reduced clearance may mean the driver's foot could brush the side of the brake pedal when going from the accelerator to the brake, thus increasing stopping distances and the risk of a crash.

Gas prices still slipping, survey says

Ford dealers will remove the carpet padding and replace the left-side console trim panel free of charge, the NHTSA said.

The automaker will notify owners, the administration said, but customers may also contact the NHTSA's vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or go to www.safercar.com. CNN

Can someone take a picture of a gas/brake pedals that supposed to be right? I don't see how Ford can fix it by adjusting the carpet...

The new trim panel (mentioned in the recall) probably leaves much more space between the accelerator and the left front side of the console.

I have this problem, I need to check my build date. I noticed it when I first drove it off the lot. I dont even have that large of a shoe and the left side of it hits the break pedal. Its definitely annoying but Ive learned to live with it. Im just worried in case of an emergency situation if Im needing to his that break in a split second, my foot may hit the break on the side first.

Recalls are bound to happen quite a bit with the 1st year of a new model/total redeisgn. Good thing they caught that early!
