I decided to work a little on the escape today

painted two of the wheels

Cut out some bumper mounting brackets, drilled and added four bolts on each side, and tack welded the bumper in place

I'm going to add the red part, but I dunno about the blue. I thought maybe I'd add a loop around the headlights out of some 3/4" emt conduit.

It's an Eastwood 135 amp. I'm using flux core wire in right now.

Finished. I don't think I'll put the hoop around the headlights. I've got some primer on it now.

That's a great trip. I frequent the Expedition Portal forums where trips like this are the intent but way too many people get caught up in having the right gear and the right vehicle and never make it out of the driveway.

All this was done in an 11 year old FWD Escape. That's perfect. A simple DIY sleeping platform with some storage drawers and a rooftop carrier. It's perfect.

Can you open your hood without having to take that off/apart?

Yeah I have gone on there on occasion and you are certainly right about that. Lots of people spending $1500 on a roof top tent that most are never going to use, but when they do they are still tenting and can't set it up at a walmart for the night.

The escape did a great job. Only way it could have gone better is if it was AWD and had some more aggressive tires to get a little farther off the beaten path.

You know, I haven't checked. I'm out of town for a week, otherwise I'd go out and see. I think it will be fine though.

Now is the time to check that. You have time to tweak your design if you need to. You really don't have an true side view photo but it looks to me like you might have an issue opting your hood.

I need to go to the store to get a few more clips to finish mounting the bumper cover, but other than that it's done. :)

Hood opens too lol
