Awesome job man..I'm think I'm gonna give this a shot.. A friend of mine just blew the engine in his 2005 E and is tight on money and he's willing to give it a shot. Do you happen to know what was the 8th digit in the donor car?

The yard I got it from didn't have the VIN for the donor car handy. However, I would assume the 8th digit was "N". 2.3="Z" 2.0="N".

Just make sure to get a 2003-2007 motor. Pre-2003 was the Zetec motor(8th digit "P") which will not work. In 2008 they switched the camshafts to a different style so the cam sensor won't work. Unfortunately I got an '08 motor. Hasn't hurt the performance at all, just an annoying CEL all the time. I did pick up the correct camshaft for $70 (new) so I just have to find the time and motivation to do the swap. Anyways, I have put over 3,000 miles on the motor since the swap and haven't had a single issue, so it is definitely a viable option for repair.

I just got the tribute here gonna start pulling the motor this week and get the new motor this weekend. I found a 17,000 mile 2.0 for 300. Can't pass that up I'm gonna go with the same year motor. What cam sensor did you get because they're different, what do you think about just changing the plug they're both 2 wire plugs?

Wow, that's a steal on that motor. That thing is just barely broken in lol

If it's a 2 wire plug it should work by swapping the plugs. Or, the sensor from the original motor should fit the mounting hole on the new motor. If it were me, I would try swapping the original sensor onto the new motor first, if you have no luck there, then swap the plugs and try the sensor off the new motor.

Awesome! Sound like you will have a running tribute in no time at all. The only advice I have is make sure to swap the intakes while both motors are out. I forgot to and it was a b***h to do with it installed. Also, the coolant nipple coming out of the block of the 2.0 is a little too long to accommodate the 2.3's intake so you will have to tap it with a mallet to get it to bend towards the block. (see post 3 towards the beginning of this thread)

Just now saw this thread, this is one of the coolest diy threads on any forum that I've ever seen. Huge props for having the balls to try this, and the same for taking the time to share with photos and details. If my 2.3l engine goes I will definitely be pulling this thread up!

Hello Dark pass....and all I'm new to the forum

Awesome write up you just made my day! :yahoo: :thumb:
we have a 05 Tribute 2.3 that has spun connecting rod bearing on # one. I was it the process of switching out the bearings and having trouble finding new bolts for the connecting rod ( supposed to replace them when doing this).
I wondered the difference/similarities between the 2 engines and now after reading your post I'm gonna go for the swap to a much better engine and get a 2.0. And get rid of the bearing killer 2.3.
I plan on finding a low mileage 2.0 from a 2004 to a 2007 Do you have any other pointers?

Thanks man. It was a gamble but it definitely paid off. Unfortunately, I blew my tranny last weekend so I had to part ways with the Escape. I wanted to snag a CD4E from a Ford Contour so then this thing would have really been a mutt lol. However, the CD4E on the contour was a little too different to make it work.

As long as you get a 2.0 in that year range, you should be good to go. The only major issues I ran into are covered in the thread. If you hit any problems and need some advice, feel free to PM me and I will do my best to help out. The biggest thing I can say is to pull the transmission for the swap. I tried to do it with it still attached and it was a nightmare. I ended up pulling the tranny anyways so I basically just wasted several hours in trying to save 20 minutes. Good luck with the swap!
